cassetteshelf.com FAQ

about us

cassetteshelf.com was founded by Darius Laprise (me) in 2026. I made a cassette shelf system for myself as I wanted to get all my tapes out of the dusty corner of my room. I didn't want a bulky, plastic shelf that would be an eyesore and not be expandable as my collection grows. I made this simple system so that my shelf would blend with its surroundings and somewhat elegantly disappear behind the cassettes. I felt like no product like mine existed in the niche world of cassette collecting so I decided to make the product available, both for sale and IP-wise by making it an open-source project.

modularity

one of the main ideas of the shelf is its modularity. The shelf is made so that it can be configured to fit anybody's needs, now and forever. A small shelf can easily grow into a bigger one as more cassettes need storage over time. The assembly/modification of the shelves is very simple and quick. This was an important detail that makes the shelf sustainable into the future.

shipping

we try to keep shipping prices as low as possible. To do so, we ship all shelves (unless specified) disassembled. We provide all necessary tools as well as the instruction manual to assemble the shelf. Our packaging uses no plastic.

pricing

we try to keep the price as fair as possible. We use a simple formula that is cost + and undisclosed percentage. Our margins on the shelves are on the lower end of what is considered normal in the retail space. We are proud that our shelves are price-competitive with alternatives that we deem of much lower quality. Most cassettes shelves you'll find online or in stores are either plastic, fragile, cheaply made, ugly or won't showcase your actual collection. For a very similar price in most cases, we offer a product that is well-designed, well-made and beautiful.

material sourcing

as of september 2026, all of the hardware for the shelves comes from the United States. The metal rods and plates are made in China. The plastic parts are made in Canada. Research and sourcing is constantly being updated to find the best manufacturers at the best price.

material quality

material quality is very important for the sustainability and quality of the product. Every single part of the shelf is aluminum or steel, for the exception of the small washer and wall adapter guide, which are made from 3D-printed eco-friendly PLA. This means that all of the plastic parts are made from low-waste additive manufacturing. The all-metal quality of the shelf gives it a premium feel without being overpriced.
